Road Construction and The Dance

By Kim Wells
You are probably thinking, what in the world has one got to do with the other? Let's find out.

Prayer Warrior Ministries - Last week, I traveled to a town 25 miles away from where I live.
About a mile into the journey, I encountered road work, and a thirty minute trip ended up taking me over an hour.

I was stopped by the road crew three different times, so that I could go slowly around where they were working.
In the distance, less than half a mile away, I could see the Interstate that I had chosen not to travel on that day.
As I sat there in the heat, I watched the traffic whiz by, and berated myself for taking the smaller road.

There were no access roads to the Interstate from where I was, so, I had to just sit there, baking in the unusually warm spring heat, wishing that it were me on that "fast road."

Oh,Lord,long will this take?

I had been suddenly stopped in my race by a hot and smelly road construction site.

I looked around to see if there are any signs of immediate movement. Impatiently tapping my fingers on the dash, I began to fidget with the radio, and bite my tongue.

Watching the crew trucks moving through the construction as easily as ants in a hill, I thought, surely I could go through that as easy.

Pointedly looking at my watch, I sighed as though I were in agony, throwing a few glares at the young woman holding the Stop sign as though that would impress her into thinking I was important enough to make concession for this once, and personally escort me through.

As time marched on,I became aware of other things around me,things that had escaped my attention earlier.
As I had my window rolled down, I noticed a sound that I had not heard since I was a child.
Listening closer, I recognized it as a Meadowlark, a bird that has a beautiful song.
I turned off the radio, so as to listen to this once familiar voice.

Trying to locate the source, my attention was captured by the breeze playing with the prairie grass.
A smile came upon my face as for the first time in years, I really saw the gentle sway of each blade of grass as the wind kissed it.
I was no longer concerned about the wait I was facing, I was involved with the dance between the prairie grass, and its partner, the wind.

I could sense the Lord trying to speak to me through what I was witnessing.
I could feel Him tugging at my spirit, saying, "Look at what you are seeing."
I was caught up in an image of God and I in a dance together. I was struggling with this dance, attempting to learn it.

I saw that God had been trying to teach me, but, I had been trying to lead, and not simply be moved by His breath as the grass was moved by the breeze.
I had thought that I had a lead part in this dance with my Father, but, He was now trying to show me that I am to simply follow His lead, and sway with His timing.
He showed me that I had been trying to dance to a different beat than what He was playing.

As I realized this, the pilot car arrived to take me to my destination.
As we proceeded through the constuction site, I continued to watch the grasses bend to the touch of its master, with the song of the Meadowlark echoing in response.

Lord, I began to pray, move me as You have moved the prairie grass.

Teach me how to dance with You Lord.
I put my hand in His, and finally, I let Him lead.
